Bob Hornick recently became one of our regular volunteers. He wanted to share with us and with you what brought him to the Food Bank and what a meaningful experience volunteering has been for him.
I worked for 38 years for a company that went bankrupt and was sold 2 and 1/2 years ago. I was able to keep my job with the new company, but soon lost my position and had a new role. In January 2010, I was told that there was not enough work so was laid off. The first two months took their toll… I felt I had lost my identity and purpose. Who was I?
Oh, I had been there before. My spouse of 36 years died 3 years ago. At that time I still had my JOB, that had been a major part of my life. I had some identity and purpose, and with God’s help I was doing okay again. I re-married a great woman who also had a spouse die from cancer. She is very supportive of me and I praise God for her.
But now, jobless … not ready for retirement and in Michigan’s Work Climate… very depressing. However, a friend told me about the Food Bank and volunteering there…
So I met him there, and have come back Monday thru Friday for the last 6 weeks. I enjoy helping there for a great cause, and seeing how they are able to multiply the assets they have to help so many. The staff and other volunteers are so good to work with.
It makes me feel like I am making a difference. It uplifts me…….. Motivates me in the morning to get out of bed again…… I am putting back into our State again.
